What is SAP ABAP?

ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is the language in which SAP itself is written, and the language used to extend it. Developers write ABAP to create reports, data conversions, interfaces to other systems, printable forms and custom logic inside business processes.

In S/4HANA, ABAP has grown to include Core Data Services (CDS) views, OData services and the RESTful Application Programming model, which are used to build modern Fiori apps. Developers who know both classic and modern ABAP are in strong demand.

  1. A business user asks for a report that SAP does not provide as standard.
  2. The developer reads the specification and identifies the tables or CDS views that hold the data.
