How to use this

Preparing for a SAP Basis interview

Interviewers for fresher and early-career roles test fundamentals and whether you have used the system. Understand each answer instead of memorising it, and be ready to describe how you would do the task in SAP. If you have not practised yet, say so honestly and explain what you have learned.

10 SAP Basis questions with answers

  1. Describe the SAP three-tier architecture.
    Presentation layer (the user interface), application layer (application servers that run the SAP programs) and database layer (the database that stores the data).
  2. Explain the transport landscape.
    A typical landscape has development, quality and production systems. Changes are made in development, collected in transport requests and moved through the landscape using the Transport Management System (STMS).
  3. What is a client?
    A client is a self-contained unit within a system with its own master data, user data and customising. Clients are maintained in transaction SCC4.
  4. How do you create users and manage authorisations?
    Users are created in SU01. Authorisations are grouped in roles created in PFCG, which are assigned to users.
  5. Which transactions do you use for monitoring?
    SM50 and SM66 for work processes, ST22 for ABAP dumps, SM21 for the system log, SM12 for locks and ST03N for workload analysis.
  6. How are background jobs scheduled and monitored?
    Jobs are scheduled in SM36 and monitored in SM37, where you can see status, logs and spool output.
  7. How do you apply support packages and SAP Notes?
    Support packages are applied with SPAM or SAINT. Individual corrections are applied as SAP Notes using SNOTE.
  8. What are profile parameters?
    System settings that control behaviour, such as memory and work processes. Instance profiles are maintained in RZ10 and parameters can be viewed in RZ11.
  9. What is an RFC destination?
    A configuration, maintained in SM59, that defines how one system connects to another for remote function calls.
  10. What does HANA administration involve?
    Monitoring memory and disk, configuring backup and recovery, managing users and applying updates, using tools such as SAP HANA Cockpit.
